Bicycle Regulations
Avalon offers an expansive bicycle path that runs along Dune Drive in the central and southern portions of our community, and on Avalon and First Avenues in our north end. Follow the bike path and signage for a safe and pleasurable bicycling experience. Riding bicycles on sidewalks in the Dune Drive business district is prohibited.
Bike Safety Tips to Keep in Mind
Walk, and do not ride, bicycles on sidewalks in our
Dune Drive business district, per Borough ordinance.
Bicycles are permitted on the boardwalk between the hours of 5-10am daily.
New Jersey requires all riders under the age of 17 to wear a safety helmet.
Bikes shall be equipped with a front headlamp, a rear red lamp, and a bell or another audible device.
New Jersey law states a bicycle must obey all state and local automobile driving laws.

NJ E-Bike Laws
Licensing
Riders under 15 may not operate an e-bike.
Riders ages 15-16 must obtain a motorized bicycle license.
Riders ages 17+ may use a valid NJ Drivers’s License.
Registration
All e-bikes must be registered with the NJ MVC.
Insurance
Liability insurance is required for all e-bikes.
Timeline & Fees
6 month compliance period before fines begin (ends July 19, 2026.)
First-year license and registration fees waived.
Classes of E-Bikes
Low-Speed Electric Bikes: pedal-assist up to 20mph
Motorized Bikes: throttles up to 28mph
Electric Motorized Bicycles: can exceed 28mph with pedal assistance
